Function Of The Colon

The colon is approximately five feet long and comes between the small intestine and the rectum which leads to the anus. In humans the colon consists of four sections: the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon, and the lastly the sigmoid colon. Partially digested food known as chyme, enters the colon from the small intestine and there the colon absorbs the water, salt and nutrients.

The colon muscles contract moving the partially digested food through the colon, it combines with mucus and bacteria on into the rectum where it becomes faeces. These contractions are controlled by hormones, nerves and impulses in the colon muscles. If the muscles do not work correctly the food does not get pushed through the colon properly and you may experience cramps, constipation, abdominal pain or bloating, diarrhoea or incomplete stools.

The colon is susceptible to several different disorders and diseases:

Colitis – the inflammation of the colon

Chron’s disease – where your body’s immune system attacks its own gastrointestinal system

Diverticulosis – where pockets bulge out of the colon wall

Colorectal cancer – thought to develop from polyps in the colon which develop into malignant growths

To avoid these disorders, try to keep your colon healthy by eating lots of fiber in the form of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, nuts and seeds. If you have been neglecting your colon and it needs some TLC try a  colon cleanse  to get rid of any residual waste and restore the natural balance of internal flora.
