Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is a condition that occurs when pouches bulge out of the colon and these pouches, known as diverticula become inflamed.

Diverticulosis, is when you have the pouches but they are not inflamed. Symptoms of diverticulosis are bloating, cramping and constipation. You may also get some bleeding and inflammation. If you are bleeding from the diverticula you will see bright red blood from your rectum. Even though the bleeding may be painless, it could be serious and you should see a doctor immeditaely.

Diverticulitis, is when the pouches have become inflamed. Symptoms are  pain in the lower part of the abdomen, with a fever, nausea, vomiting and a change in your bowel habits. If you think you have diverticulitis you must see a doctor straight away.

Although the cause of diverticulitis is not totally agreed on, many doctors agree that a diet low in fiber is the cause. Fiber absorbs water and makes it easier to pass a stool. If you do not have enough fiber in your diet constipation is likely. Constipation means that you are likely to be straining to go to the toilet and this straining causes the pouches or diverticula to develop. If you are not clearing your colon fully, the waste that gets left behind will house the bacteria that will lead to the inflammation of diverticulitis.

Diverticular disease is not always serious, but if it is there can be bleeding, rips in the pouches, blockages and you may even reach the point where a hole develops in the colon and your faeces leak into the abdomen.

To avoid diverticular disease you should eat a diet that contains plenty of fiber. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains such as bread, pasta and brown rice, and legumes such as kidney beans, chick peas and lentils. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, all that fiber will not help unless it has water to absorb.

If you have been eating an unhealthy diet and think you may be heading towards diverticulitis it would be well worth doing a colon cleanse to get rid of any of the waste that has been accumulating, you will then have a clean colon to start your new healthy eating plan!
